TAIEX-RIPAP Multi-beneficiary sectoral workshop focussing on priority GHG emission and removal categories

The RIPAP along with TAIEX is organising a two-day Multi-beneficiary sectoral workshop focussing on priority GHG emission and removal categories to be held on 5-6 June 2018 in Skopje, FYROM*.

At present candidate and potential candidate, countries need to report national GHG inventories in line with Article 6 of the Monitoring Mechanism Regulation. All beneficiaries have prepared national inventories. However, the coverage of sectors and gases is often incomplete, the inventory is not available for all years since 1990 for some countries, and there are issues with the quality of data and uncertainty of estimates.

All beneficiaries, with the exception of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and to some extent Turkey, have relied on external expertise for the preparation of projections of greenhouse gas emissions for the purpose of preparation of climate strategies, energy strategies and Intended National Contributions. Data availability and quality is insufficient for preparing high-quality projections.

Hence, the aim of the workshop is to build capacity in beneficiary countries to compile national GHG emission inventories in line with Article 6 of Regulation 525/2013. This will contribute to wider climate policy objectives related to the implementation of medium and long-term EU climate goals as well as the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
The participants will acquire:

  • improved understanding of the requirements of Article 6 of Regulation 525/2013
  • improved understanding of technical, methodological requirements for the compilation of GHG emission inventories in line with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines
  • improved understanding of data collection procedures in line with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines
  • improved understanding of QA/QC procedures in line with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines including TACCC principles

The structure will be hands-on training for the majority of the workshop encouraging all beneficiary countries to have detailed technical support from facilitators. Group discussions and presentations will also take place.
